The oculomotor nerve originates in the midbrain, precisely the oculomotor nucleus, and leaves the skull through a small opening known as the superior orbital fissure. It is primarily composed of motor fibers, which are responsible for controlling the superior, inferior, and medial rectus muscles, as well as the inferior oblique muscle. These muscles contribute to eye movements, including up, down, and medially, allowing for voluntary tracking of objects and focusing on different points of visual interest.
Moreover, the cranial nerve III also carries parasympathetic fibers that innervate the muscles of the iris and ciliary body, regulating the size of the pupil and controlling accommodation for near vision focus. Damage or dysfunction of the oculomotor nerve can result in a range of symptoms, including impaired eye movement, double vision, ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid), and dilation abnormalities of the pupil.
