Fluorescent lights are artificial light sources that produce illumination through the process of fluorescence. They consist of long, tubular glass bulbs filled with mercury vapor and a small amount of inert gas, such as argon or krypton. The inner surface of the bulb is coated with a phosphor material.
When electricity is passed through the gas-filled tube, it excites the mercury vapor, causing it to emit ultraviolet (UV) light. The UV light then strikes the phosphor coating, causing it to fluoresce or emit visible light. This visible light, which can vary in color temperature, is what is emitted by the fluorescent bulb.
Due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan, fluorescent lights have become a popular choice for various indoor lighting applications. They have found extensive use in commercial and industrial settings, as well as in residential buildings.
Fluorescent lights provide a brighter and more uniform illumination compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. They also have a higher lumen per watt output, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced electricity costs. However, they do require ballasts to regulate and control the electrical current passing through the bulb.
While compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are a common type of fluorescent lights, the advancements in technology have also led to the development of light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which are now becoming a popular alternative due to their even greater energy efficiency and longer lifespan.

Etymology of FLUORESCENT LIGHTS
The word "fluorescent" originated from the Latin word "fluorescere", which means "to flow into". It was coined by the French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel in 1852 to describe the property of certain substances to emit light or glow when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The term "fluorescent lights" refers to the electric lights that utilize the process of fluorescence to produce visible light.
