A pressurized water reactor (PWR) is a type of nuclear reactor used in the production of electricity. It is characterized by the use of a pressurized water coolant to transfer heat from the reactor core to a steam generator. The steam produced is then used to drive a turbine, which in turn generates electricity.
In a PWR, the reactor core contains fuel assemblies consisting of enriched uranium or plutonium. These fuel assemblies are placed in a tank filled with pressurized water, which acts as both the coolant and moderator. The pressurized water circulates through the reactor core, absorbing heat from the fission reactions taking place in the fuel. This hot water is then transferred to a heat exchanger, where it heats a separate loop of water, without mixing with it. The secondary loop of water, under lower pressure, is turned into steam by the heat absorbed from the primary loop. The steam then passes through a turbine, causing it to rotate and generate electricity.
The advantage of a pressurized water reactor is its high thermal efficiency and safety features. The pressurized coolant enables the water to remain in a liquid state even at high temperatures, reducing the risk of a coolant leak and enhancing safety. Additionally, the closed-loop design of the system prevents the radioactive materials in the reactor core from coming into direct contact with the environment. This containment feature minimizes the potential release of radioactive materials during an accident, reducing the impact on public and environmental health.
