1. RBOCS is an initialism that stands for "Regional Bell Operating Companies." The term refers to a group of seven regional telephone companies that were created as a result of the breakup of AT&T in 1984.

   Following an antitrust lawsuit, AT&T was forced to divest its local exchange services and was prohibited from providing long-distance services. As a result, the company was split into regional entities known as RBOCs.    The creation of RBOCs aimed to promote competition in the telecommunications industry and prevent the monopoly control that AT&T had previously held. The RBOCs were meant to provide local telephone services and connect customers to long-distance carriers, fostering a more competitive market environment. However, over time, many RBOCs have merged with other companies, leading to a consolidation of the industry.
