Reed-Sternberg cells are large, abnormal cells found in Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. These cells are characterized by their owl-eyed appearance, with multiple nuclei that have a distinct shape resembling a "mirror image" or "horse shoe." The identification of Reed-Sternberg cells in a biopsy sample is a crucial diagnostic criterion for Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Developed by Carl Sternberg and Dorothy Reed in the early 20th century, these cells play a significant role in differentiating Hodgkin's lymphoma from other types of lymphoma. These cells are derived from B cells, a type of white blood cell that normally helps the immune system fight infections. However, in Hodgkin's lymphoma, a chromosomal abnormality occurs during the B cell development, leading to the formation of Reed-Sternberg cells.
Reed-Sternberg cells also have an important clinical significance. Their presence can help determine the stage and prognosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma. These cells release various molecules, known as cytokines, which promote inflammation and can contribute to the characteristic symptoms of the disease, such as enlarged lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
