The South American sea lion, commonly referred to by its scientific name Otaria flavescens, is a marine mammal indigenous to the coastal regions of South America. These marine mammals belong to the family Otariidae, which also includes other species of fur seals and sea lions.
South American sea lions exhibit a sexually dimorphic characteristic, with adult males measuring significantly larger than adult females. Adult males can grow up to 2.5 meters in length and weigh around 350 kg, while adult females generally reach lengths of up to 2 meters and weigh around 150 kg. They possess a distinct external appearance, with a streamlined body, a distinctive thick neck, and a bulbous forehead.
Their coat coloration varies, ranging from light brown to dark grey, with adult males usually displaying a darker shade compared to females and juveniles. South American sea lions are well adapted to aquatic life, possessing strong flippers, which they use for exceptional maneuverability in the water. They also exhibit excellent diving capabilities, allowing them to reach depths of around 200 meters during hunting forays.
These sea lions are highly social animals, often dwelling in large colonies consisting of both males and females.
