Vidicon is a term that refers to a type of television camera tube or image sensor used to convert optical images into electrical signals. Originally developed in the 1950s, vidicon tubes have been widely used in television broadcasting, industrial imaging, and other applications.
The vidicon tube typically consists of a photosensitive target, a conducting electrode, and an electron beam. When light falls on the photosensitive target, it causes the emission of photoelectrons. These electrons are then attracted towards the conducting electrode by the electric field created by the voltage difference between the target and the electrode.
As the electron beam scans the target, it gathers the charge from the photoelectrons, creating an electrical signal that corresponds to the intensity of the light. This signal is then processed and transmitted for further display or recording.
Vidicons are known for their ability to capture images in various lighting conditions, as they have a high sensitivity to low light levels. However, they have limitations in terms of color reproduction and resolution.
With advancements in technology, vidicon tubes have largely been replaced by other image sensors, such as charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, which offer improved image quality and greater functionality. Etymology of VIDICON
The word vidicon is derived from the combination of the Latin word videre, meaning to see, and con, which is short for conus, meaning cone. The term was created in the 1950s as the name for a type of television camera tube that used a photoconductive surface in the shape of a cone to capture images. The cone-shaped photoconductive target replaced the flat surface used in previous camera tubes. Thus, vidicon essentially means cone for seeing or cone utilized for vision.
