The Western gray squirrel, scientifically known as Sciurus griseus, is a mammal belonging to the family Sciuridae. It is a species of squirrel endemic to the western regions of the United States. With a body length ranging from 17 to 23 inches (43 to 58 cm), it is characterized by its relatively large size among the squirrel species.
The Western gray squirrel features a bushy tail that can be up to 13 inches (33 cm) long, aiding its balance and providing warmth during colder seasons. Its fur is typically a mixture of gray and brown hues, often with a silver tint on its back, which allows for excellent camouflage within its natural habitat of coniferous forests and oak woodlands.
These squirrels are known for their agile and nimble movements, utilizing their sharp claws for climbing trees and jumping between branches with ease. Primarily herbivorous, their diet mainly consists of nuts, seeds, acorns, pine cones, and occasionally fungi and bark.
Being arboreal creatures, Western gray squirrels spend most of their time in trees, constructing nests called dreys made of leaves, twigs, and other materials. The breeding season for this species typically occurs from late winter to early spring. Females give birth to a litter of 1 to 4 young, nurturing them in the safety of their nest for several weeks.
